Hi all,

I was looking at one of my Dragon Lasers Spartan series handhelds, and decided to show the inside of the Spartan RW Series 640nm 100mW.

So here we go :)

I think some will find this quite interesting.

This looks like a good candidate for a DIY project :D

Also the diode seems to be only held in place by this locking ring you see in one of the picture's.
When i twist the wires the whole diode turns with it.

*After removing this ring, this is what you see*
It's not even press fited! It was loose the whole time. (must be)
The diode is only held in it's place by this silver small ring you see hanging on the wires.
And there's some thermal paste (wich seemed pritty dryed out on this ring facing the back of the diode.

And some text on the Diode itself.

Wasn't this sold by Dragonlasers as a DPSS red laser ?
Also what kind of diode is this, and what can it do power wise.

Hmmm should i put it back togheter ? ^^ Or should i do something else with it :D
Maybe a 532nm module in there ? diff diode perhaps ?
Turn the dial on the pcb ^^ ? can this diode do more then 100mW ?

Yes this laser still works, and put's out 100mW.

Cheers, Sm.

Thats really odd that they SHAPED this like a DPSS module... the only three DPSS reds I know of are 656.5nm, 660nm and 671nm. maybe the host is set for that size...

Though, I'm not sure what it previously was advertised as, but it currently doesn't say.

As for the diode itself, no idea what you have there.

Believe me, it was advertised as a DPSS laser (meaning it can do higher then 100mW) ;) back when i bought it. (people prev.. vets on this forum know)
There aint no mentioning of it today on there website. (it lacks in all departments)

It does look different in color to my genuine 300mW standard 650nm laserpointer.

It was one of my first lasers... and it costed a pritty penny.

Even in the video you can see a hint of it going to the orange side... No pinkish hue to it)

But yeah... picture's provided, gutted... i'm awaiting info from you guy's :D

100mW 640nm Red Laser Pointer - YouTube

Read the comments... i't was way back.

Other then that.... what to do with it ^^
How is the picture quallity for you guy's... ? etc.. etc.. input.
Was DL lying ? what diode is this ? c'mon.. motivate me :D

Anyone in for a project... let me know etc.. etc.. :D
Where are the guru's.

Nice find! That seems like some rather crappy build quality. It seems like it was all loose in the host? Is that correct?

Paint remover? are you going to polish it?! :D

I agree, looks like a poorly-made 5mW greenie from ebay! :yabbmad:

But i mean, from CNI......really?! What is going on with that design?
I mean, did they make a pill for a diode? This IS very interesting.
Im also very confused :0

I have no idea what's going on ^^

Think i'm going to polish it and slap a better diode in it.
Would be a nice first DIY project :)

Getting paint stripper tomorrow :D
Allready have some polishing stuff.

Cheers, Sm.

Oh my god. That host is going to look so nice polished. SO NICE.

Tsktsk to CNI for that weird construction. :tsk:

And so it begins ^^

This is just a first stage out of ..... ?

Never done this before, but it's fun to do ^^

Paint remover didn't work, so it's done by hand ^^

Just a updated picture with a bit more shine now but far from done.

I have the same host but in 589nm. It hasn't worked for a while but I've been in contact with CNI. I'm going to pay to have it upgraded from 10mW to 30mW. Now I just need ot get around to sending it to them.

I'd take it apart to see how a DPSS model is built if I wasn't sending it back.

So yeah, just wanted to go back to this..

Basicly Dragonlasers lyed about this advertising it as a dpss build back in 2010 ?

I really want to confront Frank with this, now that i know a few things myself thanks to this forum :D

Update :)

Far from done, but the shine is comming along.

So people paid for DPSS when it wasn't?

That's what i'm thinking yes...

As said earlier in this thread, there aint no mentioning about it to this date on there website.

But like the youtube video it was advertised as a DPSS build!
It also said on there website back in the day 100% :undecided:

An Informal Official Dragonlasers Youtube Channel said:
Red Laser Pointer is from Dragonlasers http://www.dragonlasers.com

Basic shots fo a 100mW 640nm DPSS Spartan red laser pointer. This laser is one of the very few genuine DPSS red laser pointers on the market and projects a very attractive deep red beam

WTH¿?¿

This is a DPSS red laser where as the cheap ones are diode lasers. DPSS lasers have much better quality.

Here's the same confusion from someone else in 2010
