I used my viper 75 again a few days ago but when I turned it on, instead of getting the usual nice green beam and dot I got about 5 seconds of one dim beam and then the dots went even dimmer and turned into two dots, one above the other...

At first I thought it had broken somehow but I tried it with new batteries and it worked perfectly.

So are dim double beams normal for weak batteries?

That's TEM01
Transverse Electromagnetic Mode
yes it can be caused by weak batteries
it's also called mode hopping if it changes between that and TEM00 (one beam)
If it does it with decent batteries, RMA it

My old X105 always did that when the batteries got low, like BlueFusion said RMA it if it starts to mode hop on new batteries.

My DX200 does that, it seems like it does it when the batteries are low or if it gets hot (on more than a constant 60secs or on off a lot over 5 mins)

i have the dx 200 too ... after like 1 min and a half i can actually see the beam split in two.. ive had my laser for about a month, and now it just started doin it.. if i let it sit for like 10 min its ok but after a little bit it starts doin it again

Batteries are getting low probably. Mine does it if I over power it (AAA e2 lithiums) or if the batteries get low. My DX200 loves the rechargables (1.2v).

Don't let it run for more then ~60 seconds at a time, let it rest in between.
