Dorcy "slim"

I just got a dorcy slim like this one .. 2AA's and I am curious as to weather it is possible to use the 1W LED driver from the flashlight and add the 16v 47uF cap across the laser diode with resistor.... those 1W LEDs are 3.0V diodes right..

Anyone tell me if this is a good idea?
 





good question. tbh I don't know. I've never gotten the circuit out intact. If you did you can test it easily enough. voltage and current must be at 3v and 150ma-350ma.

:D :D :D :D :) :) :) Well BIG discovery today Kenom, the dorcy slim has MORE than enough voltage (2.8-3.0v) to drive a 18x burner open can type diode. had an older diode around (same type) and the diode emitted a hot red light!!

I estimate the current to be ~500-600mA.. far to high to be safe for heating sake for a laser diode but with a resistor and a capacitor ... It will be fine.

this is a 500mW max rated open can type diode I plan on running it to 350mW, same as in duty in those burners.
 
well for the diodes that most of us have been using 300ma is almost too high. The sony diodes that senkat is selling are only rated at 350ma max so you'd defenitly have to bring the current down a lot. Even the open can diodes I've seen are not rated to run that high so you might want to check and see. I'm curious where you got this diode rated at 500mw. Most of us would love to get our hands on a nice diode like that.
 
Well, this is an open can type out of an 18x LG DVD burner, I did a spec search on this diode, or unless I have the wrong diode.. It is 90mm 500mW MAX? LG, operating 300-350mW duty. I of course will want to be running this diode at around 300mW or below. I cannot find a serial on the LED!!
Anyway... bottom line the 1W LED driver in the Dorcy slim has almost the right circuit to drive the laser. it supplies 3v but the current is too high. Also a note to point out.. the Dorcy line of flashlights are overdriven circuits. They supply some cases 1.5x-2x the amount of current the LED needs to drive at 100% output.
 
Many of us have been searching for a spec sheet for an open can diode. If you can dig it up it would be very helpful...thanks.
 
Depends on the dorcy and the led in it.  The luxeon 1 in the dorcy jr. (1 watt) is being driven right at it's normal operating current and voltage.

The luxeon rebel in the dorcy slim is rated at up to 1 amp.
 
really... ah... well sad news today, I toasted my open can diode today trying to get it out of it's heat sink.
I really need to get a diode without it being firmly epoxied. :'( I guess I need to find a source of nonpotted diodes.

too much heat killed it.

BTW.. does anyone know where I could find a diode 300mW red that I could stick into a brass focusing housing?
 
I think we'd all like to know where to get one. Point is most diodes that we've gotten even the open can one's have not been rated that high. I think the most you can expect on the current burning diodes in dvd-rw's is 300mw tec cooled and overdriven to the hilt!
 
ok, well I just got a new diode from a lightscribe drive DVD burner... it is a HP.

I will see what this leads to? anyone?

Have you managed to drive your LD off this driver yet?

As a (albeit inefficient) test, could you just stick 2-4 ohms worth of resistors on the output of this circuit to bring the current down to a managable 75-150 mA?

Anyone?
 
nah, Like I said above. I've never suceeded in getting the thing out in one peice.
 
Well, I did another test with a dorcy slim, and I got specs about the driver.
first of all it is a High freq. driver, that delivers 650-700mA at 3v to the 1W diode.
So with this in mind I tried driving my open can diode from a phillips 20x with a Resistor/ capacitor network. 10v 46uF across the diode contacts and a 1W rated 20 Ohm for current limiting. My current is around 200-230mA. The resulting driver works fine. 8-) I hope my discovery has helped out in some way?
GO EASY ON THE DIODE DRIVER CIRCUIT ... I managed to fry one.... use low heat with your soldiering iron. remember to take the 1W diode off the board gently.. a dremel drill tool will work fine.
I thank those of you you posted detailed info on this forum as it has helped in my quest for building portable higher power lasers.. :)

OK so what I'd like to know now is how you got the doggone thing out without breaking it!!!
 
i used a pair of sharp cutters to break the MgAl heat-sink... then I just carefully pryed using my fingers. It works well.. Diode is in perfect condition !!


I made a .pdf on how I removed the diode... problem is how do I upload it for people to see ? hmmm
