Does anyone have any experience with a Spartan BP?

I'm kicking around the idea of buying myself a Spartan BP40 sometime soon. Are these things worth the money? I like the concept of them because they're smaller than an RPL (looks to be minimag sized) and don't have all of the annoying safety features that I don't want to be bothered with on a ~35mw laser. Plus, I think they look cool. Are these lasers reliable and worth the cash, or is it just safer to shell out more for an RPL or something.

What are your thoughts on the Spartan series?

Go for it!
Dragonlasers seems to be a reputable company...

Hi,

I've had a Spartan BP 20mw for a very long time, I can say it's a great laser. I'm sorry I didn't got for the 40mw, maybe I'll try to trade it in sometime.
Here are my thoughts on it:
It does have a very nice body.
This color is very bright, compared to the 4 colors I have - red, green, blue and violet, the blue seems to be second in brightness after green. Beautiful beam at night.
And I can burn with it using a focusing lens.

For a 20mw it's surprisingly strong, perhaps I got an overpowered one...

You should note however that it's a pulsed laser unlike blue RPL, it shows clearly when you move the laser fast, see the photo I made.
I don't mind this at all, it's actually nice to have one special laser. You can hear a high humming sound when it's on, probably the circuits pulsing.

And - if I understand correctly about mode hopping, the laser sometimes works in TEM00, but it sometimes goes TEM01 because it becomes two separate dots shaped like half circles (this is only noticeable when using a lens to widen the dot, otherwise you can't tell).

One last thing regarding Dragon Lasers - this is a really nice company, they were quick to respond to my questions and the delivery was pretty fast. If they ever sell yellow Spartan lasers (pulsed or not), I'll instantly buy it from them (they had this plan some time ago but then they decided to cancel).

I hope this helps you decide (if you haven't already),

Ohad
