Do I need a Ir filter for a 200mW laser?

So, I recently ordered 200mW 532nm (chinese) laser.
I think it outputs something 120-180mW.

So do I need a IR filter for it/ IR protecting goggles. (Eagle Pair)

Im thinking of buying Dragonlaser goggles, nothing more

You should be okay without an IR filter for general pointing and burning. IR diverges much faster than 532. As long as you don't do anything stupid with your laser then you shouldn't worry. All though... an IR filter is always good to have. All of my lasers are filtered except my 30mw one.

The choice is yours. Just remember IR "is" dangerous if there is enough of it and IR filters are cheap

So it wouldn't be necessary to put IR filter on 200mW laser.
Im going to just buy Dragonlaser's goggles, no ir filters.

Plain and simple. Not really. Unless you are really irresponsible which in that case you shouldn't have lasers . Just be safe. IR will go through those glasses so don't attempt to look directly into the laser

That´s a good point. Also. It´s not the let´s say 30mW IR that will blind you but the 120- 180mW green when hitting your unprotected eyes. Simply don´t look directly into a laser no matter you are wearing safety googles or not

Nice wordcatcher No, neither looking into a laser nor shining into an eye. The direction dosn´t matter from which point you are looking at it. Once the collimated beam hits your retina you will be blinded. Or if you like once your retina comes across a collimated laserbeam of that strenght.

I know but someone could take it serious so this can´t be told often enough and as clear as possible. I already have to blind spots in my right eye caused by my sister, so now I´m even closing the door of the room where I´m dealing with lasers so noone else can be harmed or do any harm to my eyes like already happened.

Sorry about that mate, so unfortunate. Did she just pick it up and start shining it around the room whilst you were shouting at her to stop?

The problem is that most people think lasers are just those small red dots used for presentations

I'm sorry but honeyx your mistake is the reason we as a forum CANNOT stress ENOUGH about eye safety. Glasses need to be worn anytime other people are in the room and those people need safety glasses too so mistakes like these don't happen.

Again I am sorry but I don't feel bad for you honeyx. There is a reason they make safety glasses and put "Caution laser radiation" signs in labs. Its to tell people that this room is dangerous.

Lasers are not toys and should be treated with respect. Wear glasses.

Not exactly. I was building a red one putting all parts together in a host and doing a short test when she came in and saw the beam. I turned it off and took my safety glasses off when she said "ohh a laser" and took it like crasy ot of my hand. In that moment it turned on and hit my eye. My blinking must then have caused the two blind spots. They are fortunally really tiny and almost not noticable anymore. Just am noticing them now when looking at something like a scanner code, but at the beginning it was horrible. Especially when trying to read something. So far I´m still one of the lucky ones but lerned my lesson not just to care what I´m doing but also to care what others might do.

Here you missed another point. I´m not living in a laboratory. And I think most of the members here also do not.

You don´t have to and it was also not my intention to do so. You simply are still missing the point. I´m talking from experience. It also was my fault not to think about my 30 years old sister could behave like a kid.

So far I´m not shure what´s your problem here. Because I´m telling others what might happen giving them what happened to me as an example to point out how important it is not just to wear safety glasses but also to care about the behavior of others dosn´t mean I want someone to feel bad with me.

Really I don´t need it, but if you have the feeling you need to comment it this way, feel free. Maybe this will make you a bit more happy.

Becouse I think this, my first "high powered" laser isnt the last one...
