Hey guys. I have a DVD burner that I am getting a red diode from and I extracted the sled and diodes from and was wondering if anyone knows which one is the red diode and which one is IR. Here's some pics of the lable, sled, and extracted diodes. Sorry about all of the pictures. Thanks.

I hope its the diode on the left! Usually I find the IR diodes have numbers on the cans. Also the cans are a bit more shinier.

But hey, harvest them both and test them with a DDL! Worst case scenario is you waste some time fiddling with the IR diode.

Just make sure that if the diode isn't giving off light you don't look into it. Its probably the IR one and not a drive-related problem.
 
The one on the right isn't damaged. There is a optic over it, but in the picture it looks crushed. Sadly I don't have a DDL (yet) and am left almost guessing. Thanks for the help though.

*EDIT*- Did a little more research and I found out that it's double layer burning. It's a 16x burner (I wonder what current it should be run at) so it's decent. Maybe they're both red :thinking: doubt it.

SCC 16x diodes run best around 250mA. IIRC you can push them a little further, but I usually do not.

Anyway...

...For your DDL, definitely use a capacitor and 1N4001 diode if you're planning on a lab type set up. it just adds security :)

You'll wanna use a 5 ohm resistor (or two parallel 10 ohm resistors) which will give you a comfortable 250mA

250ma should give you ~150mW, give or take, through an Aixiz Acrylic lens. My LPM isn't spot on since its DIY, but it tells me my 250mA 16x is giving me 165mW... which seems a tad high. But I think it would come in around 150mW on a professional LPM based on the data I've seen for 16x diodes.
 
Thank you very much! Hmmm only 150mW, looks like my plan has changed. I guess I'll put it in a gold pen host then. I got the diodes out of the heat sinks. The one in the bigger heat sink has letters and numbers on it. It also has a blue window like my olike 250mW red. The one in the smaller heat sink has no numbers and letters but has a greenish window. Lastly the one in the bigger heat sink has a circle around the pins that is extending from the base. So its a circular area that pops out. Thanks

Done. Made a lm317 based driver that puts out 125ma and hooked it up to both. It was the one on the left. That was my guess. Next to the pen build.

when you say the
one on the right do you mean in yr 2nd pic where they are still in the sled ?

OR.. in the pic of the diodes out have you switched right to left?? if SO how come??? lolololo

are they located the same on a LOC 815 sled??

I need to know- I am about to send a friend a diode to practice pressing with and DONT want to send him the red-- just the useless IR. guess I will go look for that old 815 thread as you get me confused.
 
Sorry to confuse you. The red diode is on the LEFT when they are out of the sled. And on the right when they are in the sled. If that doesnt help I can update the op with labeled drawings. :D
 
Just for your reference, dual layer doesn't make a difference to the number of diodes used, or to the power of the diodes.

To write to a dual-layer disk, it's the focusing deck (the thing suspended between magnets) that moves. It shifts the focal point depending on which layer it's writing to (or reading from).
