Daedal's new BluRay LASER

ALSO, I like the fact that you were creative with the case.  Lasers DO NOT have to be a tube.   8-)

There are metal cigarette cases about the same size as your current setup that may work well for your next one...  Keep thinking independently - that is the path forward.

Hehe... YES! I finally got it! This was attempt 3. The first one died while being taken out. The second one got zapped with the capacitor charge when I accidentally and ignorantly moved it too much while still on the proto-board. And this is my 3rd and working attempt! :D

About PhotoSop'ing one, I'll do a couple and show you what it looks like... as close as possible. And yes! You should have seen my expressions when I got the tunnel! This thing looks so BEAUTIFUL AND AMAZING! It's honestly quite an attractive color for a laser. 8-)

The output, if I had to guess it, is easily about 10mW. I'll try to verify it if only someone would lend me a power meter for a couple days :-[

Parts:
100 OHM Potentiometer
LM317 in a TO-92 package for size
Momentary push-button connected right after the battery's positive terminal wire
47uF 16V Cap and 1N4001 Diode right on the butt of the diode

I can provide an actual circuit for it, but it's the exact same as the one by National Semiconductor in the LM317 spec sheet. I simply figured out the threshold current and voltage through trial and error (22.6mA and 4.6V). I then decided to go up to 29.6mA for the continuous drive. I temporarily tested it by driving it for about 5 minuted non-stop and the diode casing barely got hot! So I was satisfied :D

As about the casing... I LOVE IT! It feels nicer than a tube in the palm of your hand honestly! It's so natural and so easy to use. You don't have to push hard to get it on either, as if the case was originally made for this exact application! It was a solid perfect fit! 8-)

I never thought about cigarette cases. I had wanted something metallic or something transparent originally, preferably metallic. Nothing metallic fit nicely around here except for the Altoids can. I had not liked the idea in itself, not to mention the residue smell and the fact that it is SO HUGE! So I had to go with my other choice... and it turned out fantastic nonetheless!

Damn that is sweet...so creative...lol. I think it is the first laser I have seen powered by a 9 volt battery...good goin there :)

The only part I am a bit confused about is the reasoning behind the 1N4001 diode. You said you are using it to drop the voltage of the battery. It would only drop it by a half volt. So I am missing the reasoning behind using it at all.
 
Reasons for using a 1N4001:

1. Limit some of the voltage and give the diode just the right amount of power required.
2. It works perfectly as a reverse polarity filter.
3. It's tiny enough and doesn't hurt, rather helps the laser diode.

1N400X diodes work best as polarity filters in the case that the battery was plugged in the wrong way... All that does is help the diode live a longer life. The voltage coming out to the BluRay diode after I had wired it up was a bit high, and with the 1N4001 in place, the voltage was just right! It was at exactly 4.6V, which is what I noticed my diode start lasing at. :)

Yes, thank you. So it takes at least 4.6 volts to get this diode to lase. This is quite a bit higher than our DIY reds. Now I understand why a 9 volt battery is much more convenient :)

YAY!! Although I should have been sleeping 5 hours ago... I just couldn't drop it once I started... I have a HUGE guide coming up on how to make your own BluRay/Violet/405nm/AWESOME LASER for less that the price of one KES-400AAA :D :D

Keep your eyes peeled... there might be a little delay in putting it online just because of the amount of stuff that is soon to come... But rest assured that this is totally worth it!

Thanx for that, I like the pictures you've got. I am actually very happy with my BluRay and am working on getting an HD unit into a pen-style kind of laser. The one I have here was made using a box from around the house and a regulated 9V battery using the LM317 simply because I had it lying around. It also provides a very stable signal at a very stable current/voltage.

I'm apparently also working on making something like 3 guides now. One for the red DIY, one for the BluRay, and one for something else that I can't remember right now (3AM and I've been out and dealing with people all day [smiley=bath.gif]). Also, to add to it, I've got appointments lined up for weeks to come and I'm also working on my website(s). Phew! What a long list... I can't believe I'm still holding onto my sanity!

But no worries... Better late than never. This will come along very nicely very soon, I promise.
