I just finished this first draft of what I think a laser should look like. This features external control of focus and current input to the long open can diode (purchased from the Monk). LM317 with 25ohm pot and 3.3ohm fixed resistors(I know people are pushing over 400ma through these work horses, I just didn't want to kill it before I got a chance to play with it for awhile), glass aixiz housing/lens, 2s Lipo 7.4v 800mah

Nice workmanship! Very classy looking, is that the heatsink from a Nitromethane monster?

Very classy and way to think outside the box. I especially like the external focus setup. Well thought out, and well designed.

Wow! I want one! Amazing work!

Does the car heatsink fit an AixiZ module without modification or did you have to modify the hole?

WOW! :D amazing! It looks totally different from all our designs! Can you explain how the focus feature works? Can you adjust it with your thumb or....? :-/ Cause your video didn't really focus on that feature, but really nice video too :D

And please tell us more about the LiPo battery and the solar powered part.(And the machine that kills fascists ;D)

Hey everybody,
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad that LPF is back on the air.

Yes the heat sink is a slightly modified cooling head for a R/C fuel engine. I bought a couple of them from $.99 to $15 ebay.
New- they're around $40. This unit is a prototype at this point. There are several things that I'll do differently/better on the next one.
Plus a couple of mistakes that I won't make again 8-) (note the epoxy repair of one of the screw pockets that was poorly placed, and some damage to one of the heat sink fins). I think that I will copper plate the heat sink on the next one (the cap of the sink is just painted now). I also plan on upgrading to a merideth glass module, the size difference will require a reworking of the focus assembly. I'll disassemble and photograph the innards in couple of days, if you want a better look. I just need to do something else for a little while. I've got some raw footage of the focus assemble that I'll post in the mean time.

HAHAHA Now everything is clear..... I used to comment (when I was younger and had nothing better to do than build pipes and bongs that potheads are the best and most creative people on the face of the planet cause you have nothing better to do when your baked outta your mind but build shit!!! lol

Im still waiting for someone to make a hash pipe, which source of heat is a diy red [smiley=evil.gif]

Photon contacted me about a laser i was selling asking if it would work for a "tobacco" vaporizor LOL

I figured it would come up at some point ;D I think its time for some pics! Wonder when DX will carry the "hash-laser" they already got the electronic cigarette ::)

Here is some video of the focus and current control mechanics. Very simple eccentric wheel for the pot, and knurled nuts become gears with a little machining. It was serendipity that the #10 knurled nuts diameter was such that the drive gear center was within .05mm of the center of the heat sink mount holes. So a longer #8 machine screw with UHMW plastic bushings made a perfect axle for the drive gear. The aixiz lens barrel has a lot of slop so this isn't lab quality focusing by any means ;).
Regarding the video I made, I hope you all understand that vaporizing medicinal plants is not my only reason for building lasers. I just think that it is important to come up with applications for our tools. "Idle hands make the devils work". My wife hates this laser, because if it's within reach I can't help but grab it and start looking for something to burn. I think this is why the idiots try to molest the airplanes. You hold one of these magic devices and you can't help but want to effect something at a distance with just a beam of light. If we can find benign ways to use our creations maybe we can keep the legislators out of our workshops. My next project is an unmanned aerial weapons platform. A small R/C helicopter with on board laser. I have a wireless video cam that I can mount on the helicopter as well. If it can handle the weight of the camera and the laser, I will be able to defend myself against balloon and match attacks, from the comfort of my desk. 8-) Safety goggles are a must with something like this, obviously.

Umm, so where is the video, showing the focus control mechanism?
