Cool, what charging/switching approach did you go for in the final design?

I went with a DPDT switch that I already had. One way turns it on. The other turns it on and adds the charger to the circuit.

A little of both. I wanted it for work. Something that would have been loud enough and had long battery life probably would have cost twice as much. Drilling the 2x 4" holes was a pain in the butt though. I've had plenty of people ask if I could make them one or suggest selling them. I'd like to find a better method for drilling the speaker holes first.

I, too, was curious about the radio in the title. I see it isn't a ham set, but what exactly is it? Looks like an AM/FM with stereo speakers, a little too close for good separation. It seems to have a lot of battery in there, so it should run for awhile on a charge.
 
The only input is a 3.5mm jack. It doesn't have any sort of tuner built in. This was mainly built for use at work although it will probably be used in the garage, back patio or other places that doesn't have a radio of some sort. The battery does last quite a while. I've had it running the full 8.5 hours at work at higher volumes due to the level of noise. I did not have to charge it all during that time.
 
Oh, so it's a stereo amplifier. That makes more sense to me. Too bad you couldn't have one of those speakers in it's own enclosure so you could remove it from the main enclosure and get better separation. It could be latched to the main enclosure so it could work as you have it now, but would have the option to remove it and get better separation with stereo.
 
Oh why bother, it's more or less a workplace boombox, and people get creative building those. I've seen them around here consisting of a battery, car stereo, and 2 speakers mounted into a big jerry can - works just fine.
