[quote author=chopper link=1225072611/0#7 date=1225074746]Nice phantom Quartz point!  I gotta start shining my laser on all my rocks and crystals!

Oh thanks! I was wondering what kind of crystal it was.

I don't know very much about crystals... What other types of quartz are there?

The phantom refers to a type of formation. Your crystal looks like it has a 'marking/imperfection" inside which looks like a 'false termination' of the crystal. Somehow impurities get on the crystal but it keeps growing. I'm no expert, just a collector. There are all types of quartz many with other names. Usually the materials are based of quartz but have impurities which change the color.

Info on phantom crystal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_crystal

Amethyst is a popular type of quartz. It's believed that the violet color comes from iron and aluminum impurities within the crystal structure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amethyst

Here's the quartz wiki which lists many different varieties... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartz

I have at least one specimen of every type listed there...is it bad that when February rolls around my friend and I go to a literal type of 'rock show'? (3rd weekend of Feb at NYS museum Albany, NY) [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
