^Because if it's drawn on a far-away bank, or especially a foreign check, the bank could clear it and give you the money weeks before they find out that it's actually no good. Checks written from far-away banks aren't always actually cleared right away, but the back looks at it and decides if they want to trust it. If they trust it, it'll "clear" and the money will be in your account, but weeks later they could find that it was really no good.
