Same thing here in Utrecht, there are a couple of university studies that have a numerus fixus - medicine, dentristry, vertrinary and perhaps some others.
The vetrinary department is useful for other sciences too though, mostly for animal testing or supply of blood or tissue for biochemical research. I think the medicine department also develops experimental procedures there, so its pretty well integrated.
