Well I finally got my first green laser from DX as long as i heat it up to 27 degrees C. it works fine. Anyway just wanted to post a few pics of something I did with a piece of pink glass rod I had laying around I thought it was cool. The laser is a true 30 mw green from dx for these photos it was still cold i couldn't be bothered to heat it up thus the output was very low.
And you might ask why I didn't send it back, well basically it would cost me more to send it back than to buy a new one.

Re: cool effect with glass rod

Now you know how an optical fiber works

That is a great example of internal reflection.

I like the fact that it turns green to red and comes out the other end green again.

All I can tell you is that the glass rod is a very light pink color. it almost looks transparent but it's not.

Fluorescence.

Point a blu-ray beam at your wife's ruby jewelry sometime... :)

LOL no time soon I have none of the above , well yes the wife I have.

It's called fluorescence. The beam makes the glass fluoresce so it glows red or orange. It doesn't change the color of the beam, so it comes out the other end green again.
Pink hi-liters and orange traffic cones fluoresce too.

grab some highlighters, remove the ink sponges, and stick them in a jar of water. then while lasing through that hold a black light near it :P

A pinkish glass rod huh? Could that be neodymium doped glass or even YAG?? :-/

I have no idea I got a few different colors from a glass maker in Venice a few years ago the pink one is the only one that does anything special with the green beam.
