Collimating 808nm in an Aixiz module

LOL. They cost $10 a piece! I'll burn 100 of them to run them on the edge.

I'm looking for 2W 9mm 808nm diodes with FAC.

I checked that eBay seller, no current auctions, but I will email.

Any response to my optical questions?

Well as I said, I used nothing more then one lens in fron if it, and got real good burning power. No FAC experience, sorry.

I do not share your opinion about the overdriving...
PHR blurays also cost ~10$ a piece, would you burn through 100 of them only to have them run 150mW after opics?

I will agree with what others have said. You may want to drive it at a lower current. If you got these diodes from Chris (heruurscience) you got a good deal, but it will not be easy to find them that cheap elsewhere.


You will have better luck finding 2W C-mounts with FAC. 9mm diodes are not used as much with >1W power.
Attaching your own FAC to the emitter is possible but it will be very tricky to get alignment right without damaging the die.

I do not know of a source for the tiny FAC lenses (they look like little slivers of fiber optic cable).
 
It funny that we take a rated 60mW Blu-ray Diode and run it at
120mW and think that's just fine...

But when a 1Watt IR LD is pushed a bit over it's 1 Watt rating...
every one is worried it will blow..

I have a 2 watt 808nm that I have easily pushed to 2.8 watts
with good heatsinking and 50% duty cycle...

All LDs can be pushed beyond the Spec Sheets... we do it all the
time... IMO :cool:

That sheds some different light on subject...

Anyhow, I think that pushing 1.5 A into 1W diode is kind of risky, because diode can be of bad quality, or defective maybe, so it will die faster...
Like people reporting dead SF-AW on 160 mA... and others run it at 200mA.

It varies greatly, but I am a very careful guy when it comes to that, I really like my lasers last long. No PHR has gone above 100mA of current draw here, nor did 1W 808 nm diodes go above 1.05 A (DX AMC regulator)

So, my advice was subjective somewhat.

I only over power LDs as a test requirement on occation...

Yeah, if they don't die right away doesn't mean they won't in an hour of usage... my philosophy :D

I think it was HMike or Dave or some other veteran, who managed to run a PHR diode with output of 300mW and something... it ran for amazing 7 minutes!

This has completely veered off course from 808nm collimation. I mine as well stay off course and add my additional two pennies. ;)

Everyone knows we can overdrive electronics at the cost of reliability. We can also run higher compression in a V8 engine at the cost of reliability. We can fire faster rounds down a rifle at the cost of barrel life. Etc, etc. It's no secret that we all have our own desires. Some of us lean towards reliability, some lean towards maximum output. IT'S A HOBBY.

I posted one of the highest efficiency BDR-205 diode plots seen yet at this forum, and have already degraded the diode about 5% in 7 minutes of use. Am I worried? Nope, I'll just buy another BDR-205 when degradation unsettles me. But, I like to feel that I am doing the forum a favor by documenting that degradation since no one else seems to be at this time.

About my diodes.

No, I don't deal with that Heruursciences guy. He overlooks messages right in front of his eyes, ignores PMs after telling me I could meet him for a module I put money aside for, and to cut the rant short, I won't be dealing with him it would appear.

I have a source for my 1W diodes, and to get 1.2W out the lens for $10 makes me wonder why anyone wouldn't want to push them to the max. It takes me about 5 minutes to pop and solder a new one in.

Does anyone have a supplier recommendation for C-mount 2W diodes with FAC? Still that ebay seller maybe? Hell, up to a 5W C-mount will do. :evil:

I agree with you 100%... it depends on what your needs are..

I've perchased a few times from snoctony on eBay.. He sells top
quality C-Mounts but the prices are a bit higher than $10.00..;)

It seems that snoctony has no items for sale at the present time
on eBay... Just do a search for Laser Diodes and a bunch of sellers
will pop up.. The only one that I have blacklisted is Junktronix...

I have bout C-mounts from him and have been satisfied.

Hi RA_pierce (and others), I bought a 2w To-3 mount 808 from snoctony here about a month ago, and I have a few questions ... (been too busy to do much with it until now). When I got it, I noticed that the top of the case is taped on (easily removable), is this normal? Also, I ask ahead of time and he assured me the FAC is built into this, but how can you really tell? I lifted the cap off and looked, but I must say, I really don't know what I am looking for. Are there any pictures of what this diode should look like with a built in FAC? I have a few lenses to try with this as soon as I build a circuit, but is there any good lens recommendations for getting the farthest distance with a tight beam?
