Coherent Laser TV Video A Must See!!!
If you can pose as a company, you can get a sample from Nichea for $2000.

That's be a helluva DIY to screw up on.  :P
That actually isn't too bad if you have the expertise to successfully make a high quality DIY pointer out of it.  Think about how much you could sell a well made 100+mw 488nm/473nm pointer for.  A dpss 30mw blue is $1200 or more.
Yeah, you could sell it to WL for $4000 and WL will to a great job in selling it to some guy for $6000. :D

They'd probably still use DPSS, but no doubt they'd be investigating direct diodes for a more reliable and neater way to do it :)

Which means they'll pump money in, do the research, get the product and mass produce it. Which means the same as 405nm diodes, they'll become cheap :D

They are going to have to if they want to compete with each other to make better TV's. ;D
They is going to be a lot of blue diodes because DPSS is so inefficient.

Geez, most of us just buy CD/DVD/Blu-ray drives and hack those.

Soon we're gonna be hacking TVs :o That would kinda make things more expensive... plus, I mean it's the latest technology TV... do we want to take it to bits or watch the Saturday night movie?

Hack it to bits . . .absolutely.

Have you seen the quality of TV shows today?

Peace,

sorry for my lack of knowledge..
can someone give me more info to what DPSS lasers are (or how they work differently) then the other kind(s)?
Wikipedia isn't helping understand much...

DPSS lasers use a strong IR pump diode (Usually from 500mW-2.5W, depending on the quality and color of the laser, DX uses 500mW pumps, LaserGlow uses 2.5W pumps). So when the IR is "pumped out" it goes through crystals, depending on the type and quality of the crystal the wavelength is altered, the IR usually goes through a series of crystals. After going through the crystals the light then goes a focusing lens, which when focused properly, sends out the light usually in a beam. With focusable lasers, you can change the focus, which adjust the focal point (point where the beam is smallest), this is helpful for burning, as more energy can me focused into a smaller point.

is DPSS possible in the small "pointers" like the true 30mW

or is it always big boxes like

whats the alternative to DPSS? pros/cons?
thanks for ur help

Actually all green laser pointers currently use dpss in them, the crystals are small so they fit fine inside a small pointer.

There are only two alternatives to dpss (that i know of), one is laser diodes which are the smallest and most effecient but as of now there are only about 3 types of visible light laser diodes, red 670nm, red 635nm, and violet. The other alternative to dpss is a gas laser, while gas lasers can produce just about every color that a dpss can they are huge and very inefecient, also they tend to be very low powered, only about 5 mw except for some like co2's which put 100s of watts of infared light.

...lazer.... ;D ;D

All green pointers are DPSS, even the true 30.

I think this was posted by CC a while ago:

Ooo I want one!!

so whats the big box (like the pic) vs the small pointer (like DX etc)?
just a large heatsink so it can run constantly for hours?

Probably not, it probably just has a big heatsink.

They are currently developing diodes for laser displays - Me and thecheat (He's another oldie... been around even longer than me) have been in contact with Nichea about it. Of course, they're being really vague about the whole thing, but they have successfully produced 100+mW 473 and 488nm diodes, and are working on producing more powerful, more efficient green diodes so they can be used.

Those TV's look amazing, BTW.  :D
Don't those diodes have ridiculously short lifetimes though?
Sure for now they do. ;D
