CNI 589nm Rebuild Questions

I highly doubt you need a new crystal....and yes they probably are. But n all seriousness, I can likely fix it for you pretty easily, both the tantalum (if needed) and the alignment. I just restored two other CNIs recently and already have the stuff out if you're interested.

I think you should take up his offer Styro! :D

I'd be interested in seeing how that turns out.

I'd definitely be interested in that, but I couldn't let you do that for free! I could send you a couple broken B+W units with still good optics in them for your own projects in exchange for your alignment hep!

Bit off topic, but would you be interested in parting with one of those? I have a 3.5W 808 c-mount sitting around.

I'm sure we could work something out. I probably could use more of those parts for sure. Send me a PM with what you have in mind/details.

I think those 'littler' drivers only go to 3 Amps i'm pretty sure, but I'm not positive. You might not be able to put one that powerful in. I'd have to check. The main 10mW version is already a several watt diode, its just being underdriven. altering the settings can often give you much more power already. probably nearly 100mW or so if everything is perfect, or close.

This thread reminds me I need to try and get my CNI 589 GLP fixed sometime too (it's only been 3 years). I suspect the pump diode went LED since the driver pulled the same amount of current before and after the thing stopped working.

That's a possibility, but that'd be hard to deduce without disassembly. I think I offered to look at it a while ago, but perhaps not. the pens are harder to work with.

I haven't managed to get the front barrel of the thing so I can't verify for sure if the diode went LED or not. I couldn't remember who at the time had a replacement diode and offered to take a look at it but I think it was you now that you mention it. If finances allow it I may get in contact with you after the first of the year. I've since replaced it with an 80mw (which does more like 110mw) CNI 589 but it's a shame for it to just sit in my desk drawer.
