So, my little box argon is at the stage where it'll happily fire down the capillary, and only the bore every so often.

I'm wondering, would letting it fire down the capillary and letting it run for a while "melt" some of the crap out?

Cheers,
Dan

No. They're not meant to carry an arc. And sending an arc through things that aren't meant to carry an arc usually destroys them. If anything, it'll just make more crap. The tube is sealed, so "melting the crap" won't help anything anyway.

If you're convinced it is because of crap in the tube, you might want to look into flashing the tube that CAN help get rid of junk, but it is risky. You essentially over-loading the cathode (with a car battery or similar) and activating getter.

There is no getter to activate on most newer tubes. 60X/Omni, yes, long ago, on some tubes. Flashing is dead, as far as modern tubes are concerned. Leave it dead.
