Not sure by smaller but more intense, yes. Hotter, Yes! Potential explosion, maybe. Hot glass isn't fun to have in your eye. Also, be aware of the color shift when the lamp is overdriven.

Like many other things, if you start out with a quality bulb, you may be able to get away with overdriving it higher than with a no-name china bulb.

GE, Philips, Osram, and Koito are some well trusted manufacturers of automotive 35W HID capsules, last I checked, which was quite some time ago. I always stuck with Philips 85122.

I have the osram in my car retrofit and tested the 55W ballast on it. The light is noticably brighter but yellower. Went back to 35W since I don't want to blow the bulbs. They are pricey
