Hi, I ordered a 650nm 200mW Diode from Aixiz and one of the pins (negative) was snapped off (poor packaging + shipping from US - UK via USPS is nto a great combination) adn i was wondering if it's possible to fix it or have i jsut wasted $40 :(

Thanks

Hi Chris, all may not be lost. ;)
First, is the snapped off pin base surrounded with an isolator (usually black) or did it just come straight out of the case (negative earth). If the former there is at least one thread on how to repair it, if the later the case of the diode is negative earth and you can connect up to whatever housing you mount it in.

in fact....Here are some more Macro shots of the anode wire repair.

The anode wire broke off flush with the base.

The base was masked with kapton tape. A dot of flux was added to the anode contact and I pre-tinned it. The replacement wire was pre-tinned as well.

Replacement wire soldered.

Kapton removed.

The solder joint is very small and will not be strong so it must be re-inforced. I used JB Weld.

The search button, top right of page, is a wonderful thing. ;)

Result!...negative earth, you can just connect the neg wire to your housing/module/heatsink.

argh im gonna sound really stupied but i cant get the solder to stick to the aixiz housing! (im using fluxcore)

Use a file to remove the chrome plating, get down to bare brass...

No problem....and welcome to the friendliest laser forum on the web ;)

Sounds like a great save and very lucky, Nice advice there Rog ;) I guess the other insulated pin is the PD.

If you haven't done it yet, it might be easier just to solder to the outside AixiZ case, because the case is negative and you might feel safer that all of that heat isn't on the diode.
