Can I solder a laser diode directly to a PCB?

Like Cyparagon said, If you're only gonna run it for a millisecond it won't really heat up and will be fine without a heatsink. Soldering it directly to a pcb is gonna be fine.

But you might have to run it for longer than a millisecond to mark wood like you want to. I'm not sure. If you have to pulse it longer you would be safer using any sort of heatsink. Even just the front of a standard 12mm module will increase the thermal mass by more than double for instance.

Good luck and have fun!
