Dont get me wrong, they are great diodes as far as power is concerned. Im always looking for 3-4w 808's for dpss pumping on the cheap $$$. As far as burning power stands, they can hit 4w, but its pushing them. But 4W is 4W, wavelength is only a concern as far as application, but will burn just as good.

Good call brett! Your right on the money regarding the little to no light from a crystal set :) 1watt of 836nm will give you about 1mW of 532nm, if that.. I tried it with mine, as I bought them to attempt pumping and wasnt too surprised that 836nm was way out of the allowable tolerance ;)

Regarding the 3 / 4watt c-mounts, the only downside is my lack of eyewear on the shelf. The best estimate for those diodes that ive found is that they are 980nm, date on the case was 1996 :-/

Thanks Wannaburn, I think someone (not on this forum) clued me into the fact that 836nm was way out of the narrow bandwidth of the peak lasing line of the Vanadate.  Also I read this in Sam's Laserfaq a couple weeks ago as well.  I'm pretty sure one of the reasons some people use active TEC cooling on the pump diode is to bring (tune) it in closer to an exact 808nm emission and in so doing, squeeze a little more efficiency from their DPSS cavities.  

I now have a hybrid crystal (but it's a really small one) that I'll be cutting my teeth on soon...probably with a Snoctony C-mount.  I'll probably fool around with that for a while before I start trying to work with discrete crystal sets and optics.  Oh, and I emailed "Tony" from Snoctony and asked about a fiber coupled diode.  He has them (and put them in his store after I asked) for 400 USD for a 750mw with a 100um spot size.  I would like one, but at that price I think I will just keep watching ebay.

Inside is a standard size c-mount with the fiber (steel coated glass :)) set right in front of the die. On the other end is the male connector with rubber cap. Total length of the fiber is approx 2ft.

The only issue is that you HAVE to use the TEC. Good news is that the TEC is 3v and the mount for the diode has a nice thermisistor already mounted. Aligning the diode should be simple, but very delicate.

Besides, these lots from sunking are usually for 4 or 5 pieces, leaving lots of room for error ;D

I got my first set of these for 15.50 ;) and he tends to always stock them. (Favorite sellers list)

*The fiber op in these are very brittle. The slightest stress of bending and they snap. If you move slow and careful, all will end well.

Great!  Thanks...and I will plan on investing in one of these very soon.  I presume you can walk me through C-mount alignment (if need be) once I get mine?  Because other than that I'm all set for my first DPSS project.  I have mil-spec goggles for 532, 1064, and 808...and I have a hybrid crystal...plus I have two LM317 drivers (and some commercial drivers) that will power the pump diode just fine. All I really want to do first is just witness the frequency doubling myself...just "get some green". Then I can move on to more efficient stuff later.
