hi. i am starting a project of building a labby. i think the items i need are a LD, battery holder, driver, switch, and a box. the driver im buying is Ghostdrive2 and the diode is a 5mw (only for practice and to see if the design will work) and i dont know what mA to get my ghostdrive at for the 5mw red.
i have attached a simple top view of my labby when its finished. so plz can someone tell me if this will work, if im missing anything and what mA to set the ghostdrive at for 5mw red. will it work at 456mA?

No.... For 5mW you need a very very low current. 456 is considered pushing it for LPC-815's which makes them run at 275mW+. Practice soldering on the 5mW diode, but save the ghost drive for an LPC-826. 826's handle a little higher current than the 815

Your wiring diagram looks good.

456mA will melt that laser diode though. While that might be pretty cool, I imagine that it's probably not the outcome you're looking for. ;)

Do you have any specs for that particular diode? See if the seller listed the operating current. If it is rated at 5mW, my guess is that it can probably only handle around 20-25mA of current.

thanks, now all i have to do is try to imagine a 5mw module inside a host becuase apperantly i have to solder wires from the + on the driver to the inside a pen host, which is stupid and impossible.
the specs for the diode are:
output power: 5mw
wavelength: 650nm
working voltage: DC 2.2V

heres the LD: eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

thanks guys ;)

The description of this diode is very clear to me

5mW 650nm 3 Pins Visible Infrared IR Red Laser Diode

yh, the infrared part and then the 650nm and red bit makes no sense, just have to hope it is a red one, not IR

does anyone know where to buy a cheap driver for a 5mw red laser diode. it shuldnt be more then $7-10. thanks
