How would you burn your eyes when its non-coherent and diffused ?

As for backreflection .. nobody really knows how bad is it (AFAIK) .. isn't it just a myth after all ? I understand if you FOCUS the beam back (even some optics can do that) .. that can be bad as there is plenty heat inside already .. but generally ?

And fiber would not be burned, my white plastic dust cap does not even get warm when I blast my 1.5W with it on (see my sig).

So what is that fiber stick thing anyway ?

They have much more accessories, like custom handhelds and ready sabers, but they use luxeon led not laser, i tryed with luxeon time ago, the effect is nice, but with a laser is definitely brighter and better.

Show us YOUR finished product. I believe the one the girl is holding is NOT the same handle.

Correct, i made many of the and with different lasers.

The one on the guide is a ROTJ model, the one in the photo is a ROTS, the one that joins to become a full double bladed sword.

Anyway, the effect is identical on all swords.
 
what about the sabers? just like yours? :)

Back reflection is *not* a myth, it's killed many diodes, and Blord recently killed his Sentorch 200mW red with a back reflection. And it's more that the cavity itself is destroyed from the intense laser light than the heat. (I believe)
 
Ultra Sabers - Luxeon LED Lightsaber and Lightsaber Conversion Experts! just like the pictures.. this guy spent 300 dollars on a saber! :O (owned)

You can make a nice lightsaber by yourself with a REAL LASER (and a little of pratice and expertise) around $100.

Anyway, there is a fact, a luxeon led lifespan is 50.000 hours (some 100.000), a laser diode is average 5.000 (some 10.000). This must be said.

So a laser saber will have a life span ten times shorter than a led saber.

You said it will stand up to a lot of "fighting"
You smack a LED around, no big deal.
You smack a LD around (or drop it 4" onto the kitchen table) and it will be pooched in no time.
 
There is NO way a 5mW pointer is brighter than whatever LED they've got in there already.

BUT TAKE CARE, to not exceed in MW power, as long as, laser will hit a mirror and reflects its beam, the power that reflects should be not enough to damage the diode. I would reccomend:

5mw - 675 red
5-10mw - 532 green
20-30mw - 447 blue

Based on what? Back reflections are only a problem with direct injection lasers that are being over-driven. For example, if you know a red is likely to blow at 400mW, and you're driving it at 350mW, a partial reflection could indeed increase the power density at the end faced to cause COD.

The green light of a DPSSL can't make it back to the diode because of the coatings on the MCA. And if ALL the light from a 30mW blue was reflected back at a perfect angle, it can only absorb a maximum of 30mW, which would not increase the power density enough to cause any damage.

If you're worried about it, try measuring the reflection of the blade. Have most of deaths in the past been from mirrors, or windows?
 
AUTO XX: actually, the website says that these swords ARE FOR FIGHTING... especially the $300 one :D
 
i am pretty sure that if someone were to build one with a LD then they would just show it off rather than fight with it. and if you think about it, 5000 hours is a long time to be playing with a lightsaber, so whether you used a LD or the stock LED, it shouldnt die just from showing it off every once in awhile

The LED lit saber, does not have a costant light diffusion above all the surface of the sword, you clearly notice a brighter part in the beginning, and the end of the blade with less light.
Even if the effect is nice, it is not memorable.
The problem is that the focus control on Led is much less precise than on Laser.

With the Laser ad the right focus, the first beam covers the 50% of the sword, the reflection on the top mirror at the end of the blade, covers the rest of 50%. And you get a costand light density above all the blade, and the effect is a wonder.

Also the Laser is brighter than several standard Led, but of course you cant compare a brighness a $5 Laser diode with a $100 Luxeon K2 ! (but you can get a better costant light effect with the first)

I suppose, as you said, a laser with more mw can be used, but i would not exceed to avoid overheating and damage. That safety limit i put on the guide, for my personal test, but everyone can experiment what he wants. Anyway i got extremely bright effects with just 10mw green and felt no need of superior light.

Of course the best effects are in night or dark rooms.
