broken 445 nm 1 watt diode

I managed to break off the negative pin on my diode. The break occurred right at the surface where the pin connected to the diode itself. If I can fix this what would be the best way to do it? Would it be better to solder it back on or use wire glue and some epoxy?

Solder is the only really acceptable connecting process for a laser diode

Re-soldering a pin is a pain.

However, you may not need to re-solder the negative pin.

Just place a spot of solder OVER the pin to join the pin stub with the case.

Then you can use the case pin as the negative path.

Of course that make the diode case-negative, but that is usually not a problem

My solution was to use solder to make a connection from the tiny end of the broken pin to the gold case of the diode. First, I made sure that the solder adhered to the pinpoint sized dot of what was remaining of the pin. Once I verified that the solder stuck well, I added a little more to connect that tiny blob to the back of the diode case.

The drawback to this is that the diode will then no longer be isolated from the case. However, since it was the negative pin in your case, this might just work out in your favor.

id want to very sure that the negative pin has good contact with the case/case pin cause if it doesnt then your drive can 'let the smoke out'

You also have to make sure your driver is happy with the negative being connected to the case.
