BluRay Driver?!






so did anyone figure out what driver board we could make, or buy a premade one?
 
yep, wouldn't give even a balloon pop from a red, but as for BluRay it's perfect!!! IMO. Daedal thinks it needs a bit more but i think 5-10mW of violet is good enough!

What (Bluray) diodes are you guys using?

Do they have a photodiode (3rd pin) output to monitor levels? This is crucial to longevity of a semiconductor laser in my experience. It would also allow one to get the diode as close to its maximum output without fear of exceeding safe operating area (abmax) at ANY time.
 
This is a diode from a ps3 assembly.

There is a stack of red, ir and violet diodes and also a photodiode.
5 pins.
 
Maybe I missed it.  What is the polarity of the BR diode ??  If the case is LD anode, I my have to make changes in my Dorcy jr.

Pinout configuration of the PS3 Blu-Ray diode

The laser diode can actually contains three laser diodes emitting at 780, 660, and 405 nm (for CD, DVD, and Blu-ray, respectively). These are connected in a CCC (Common Cathode Can) configuration. The case is the cathode (-ve) of all three laser diodes as well as the monitor photodiode.

The pinout for the PS3 diode is shown below (looking at the rear of the can).

Pinout:

* VLD: Violet (405 nm) laser diode anode (+ve).
* RLD: Red (660 nm) laser diode anode (+ve).
* IRLD: Infra-red (780 nm) laser diode anode (+ve).
* PD: Monitor Photodiode anode.
 
This thing is almost begging for an implementation with 2 of the colours red and violet. I picture either 2 momentary contact switches or a momentary contact rocker or toggle switch (with center off). Concerns have been expressed about running more than one die at a time due to heat buildup.
 
I've been thinking that too -- switch between. I suppose the red would have the best heatsinking and might be pushed.
Question for the future: If the red gets toasted, will the 405 still work ??

On both of mine, when the violet blew, so did the red. I don't think I messed with the IR
I would love to see someone design a circuit that flipflops between the red and violet at a fairly high frequency. Problem is the collimation would be wrong for one of them...

Wouldn't you need a slight adjustment to the resistance for each? Since they will draw different amps, what works for one may blow out the other.
