Blue Laser

Oh I don't have a filter capacitor. All im doing is hooking the 9volt battery up to the driver, then from the driver, I will solder on the diode onto the driver board.

Oh and millirad, all I need to do left is to short the output pads in your previous post...

as in:
Solder on the diode and then connect the two output pads?

Hey, I hope i'm posting in the right place, if not... let me know and i'll look around or start a new thread.

I'm new to lasers and my friend and I are trying to build a 405nm laser. We just bought the diodes from ebay and these are the specifications http://www.captainjacksonshoppingcenter.com/imagesForHongkong/laserdiode/100mwdatasheet.pdf

For quick reference, the threshold current is 40ma and the operating current should be about 100ma - 150ma.

We are building our own circuits, but we aren't sure if we absolutely need a focusing lens to get a visible beam/bright dot. Also, we aren't sure where or what type of focusing lens is needed.

Do not run at 120mA or more, will decrease life a lot.

Use:
AixiZ

I don't know why people think that there is a collimated beam coming from the diode. It's not. There is aproximately 40° in light emission in every angle from axiz where the diode is pointed.

Meaning that from 1 meter , "dot" is around 50cm on the wall.

Aixiz or similar diode housing is needed.

Measuring current with the LD running is also the exact same method as using the dummy load. Simply put a 1 ohm resistor in series with the LD and measure across it. It's highly advisable to use a dummy load to set the initial current of the driver though. Don't want to hook up a LD with the driver accidentally set for a really high current.
