Soldered together a SL kit using a 16X BDR 209. Driver puts out 600ma.
I love it. Puts out 900mW, reliable, and a great burner. But recently have the ability to
Increaese driver up. Was going to try to increse driver from 591 to 617. Hoping to go over 900mW. Am I wasting my time? Got some new equipment, so have to try it. Anybody getting 1 watt by jacking drive up q bit?
Thanks gang

yes but the diode might not like it, it might burn out on you. but yeah they can do 1W, I just dont recommend it. i've had two burn out at 600mA, though they lasted a little while. right now I'm getting mine replaced and I'm going to drive it @ 500mA

Thanks for your answer. I'll turn mine back down.
Sorry to hear your died at 600mA. Jordan says not to run em too high. He tests them very throughly and of course is the expert.

IIRC the safe power of running the BDR 209 is 900mW. So I think you should better stay with your set up. btw can you share some pics of your build? :D

hmmm my diode ran at 700ma and put out 1100mw+ with a g2 and still haven't burnt out yet. and i use a buck drive. may be yours burnt out becaus it use a boost drive?

My photos suck. It's the Alu.one on the SL web site.

Yeah, This much power with single mode is impressive, but at 600mA don't be surprised if it blinks out on you.:cryyy: For me 500mA has given me a long run(cross fingers). With 600mA I had random failures, sometimes it would die after several short cycles as soon as I pressed the switch, sometimes it would die in the middle of a cycle.

Isaac, what driver are you using, x-drive v7? Dont know why but I never thought about using a buck with this diode, interesting!

Just built another couple bdr. One uses a new driver but it's natural adjustable. 500mA set in a laser66 pen runs into the 700mW+ boost driver and another in an x-boost set closer to 600mA for 800mW+ but in a purple 501b. Decided it's better to be satisfied with a working unit than chasing a whole number;). I did test both diodes and as usual there's never an issue seeing over 1W on my variable DC power supply. I'm just done blowing these diodes.

Isaac, buck driver? 600mA shows at 6.5V. What driver are you using?

Hi D,
Stay at 600ma if our getting 900mW's from that your ahead of the game. Don't be fooled by the 1W Holy Grail scenario . If you feel like playing failure could be sitting around the corner Buddy. Be happy with 900mW's it's a good number for this diode remember some of them have attitudes and don't like being pushed.

Rich:)

i think it was a buck drive from lazeerer with custom pots..... mini v7 x-drive i think.
the things that killed the diode is the heat generated from the boost driver...(and those generate quiet a lot for a small package and not to mention sagging...).
as long as the buck driver is heat sinked the diode will live....
used a buck drive at 700ma and the module barely get warm....

Switched back to 600mA. Had one at 700mA. Lasted about 3 months of daily use. ( like using it to burn doodles on a piece of wood from my couch to the piece of wood by my tv.)
Got cocky, tried one at 800mA. Lasted about 45 seconds before becoming a LED. My 600mA
Puts out around 870mw.
I'm done chasing the Holly Grail of 1 watt. :)

Good. It's always a trade off what most of us are doing. You can't expect a long diode life when we double and even triple the recommended diode output.
That being said, I built 2 more laser66 pointers with 2 single modes today. One is a PL450B pushing 280+ mW and the other is a 515nm pushing 181mW (I had them set over 300 and over 200 but turned them down). They are being pushed pretty hard as DTR sets them at 300mA max and I'm pushing about 500mA on the 515nm and I think 400mA on the PL450B.
I should be building my final laser66 pen single mode with the Mits 180 638nm which will of course also be pushed. Do have another 638nm I bought by accident and that's a multimode 638nm 250. I already mounted it although I wish I hadn't as I realized I have a red krypton groove I could have thrown it in. I don't feel too keen on extracting the diode and repressing as I do have a bunch of other pen type hosts I could put it in. After that just have some LPC-826 diodes coming really cheap that may be here by weeks end besides for a other bdr coming from China in a couple weeks. Here's the link to some really cheap up to 400mW output 660nm diodes with great divergence: and it's awful hard to beat the price at under $4 each:
5pcs Mitsubishi 660nm Red Laser TO18 5 6mm LD Diode 200mW 300mW CW LPC826 | eBay

Yeah, that is a good price, I remember those were being sold at the old Stonetek store for $20+ each. That was one of the few sources of diodes before DTR became the "DiodeKing" that we all know and love:)
