Sure, but its a nice demostration, especially with the 445 casio diodes. You can easily light a cigarette in their beam, even when focussed at infinite distance - no need to focus the laser onto a spot. This does make it more dangerous thouhg, since the beam will be as wide at the cigarette tip as it will be when it hits you in the eye.
Wearing some OD3+ glasses makes the experiment entirely safe to perform, and you see when then thing its lit by its red glow too.
I dont really mind people pulling there stunts without glasses if they know and choose to accept the risks involved. The problem is posting them on youtube and such, which may inspire others to do the same.
Also, it is a true danger. This doesnt just exceed the MPE by a bit. If you were to hit yourself in the eye with a ~1 watt 445 nm beam, you will most likely suffer permanent eye damage. The is no blink to protect you anymore, within the quarter second you need to blink, you will be exposed to 200 times the upper safe limit. Surely there is a safety factor between MPE and pretty much guaranteed eye damage, but that factor is not 200 - it might be 10 on a good day.
