Anyone have experience with the Inno Pocket Scan made by American DJ?

I'm considering buying one of these some time in the future to modify it to scan the output of a expanded laser beam, anyone have any experience with this thing, is it junk or might it last awhile?

Only thing is, they use DMX control which only allows you to select preprogrammed shows or movements, through sending three digit numerical digital commands. I haven't figured out how to control them on a X-Y pointing basis, or just to scan left to right, up or down... but those two movements might be in the internal show programming or be part of the DMX programming I just haven't figured out yet. I've looked at the manual and it doesn't give info on what the show programming consists of.

I've been googling trying to find if there are any stick or hand X-Y position controllers for DMX to control it externally instead of running the internal show programs, so far haven't found something I can identify will do that. I might buy one to play with, maybe I can find a way to control the two X-Y stepper motors externally which makes buying a whole machine like this just for the mirror and motors a bit expensive.
