Hello everyone,
New here. Live in Kentucky. I am a mechanical engineer who has decided he must build himself a kick ass laser. The ultimate goal is to build a pulse laser rifle, but i know nothing about laser building and know that i must start small. I know i have alot of reading to do. But its all interesting so it should be enjoyable. On that note its very nice to meet all of you, and if you have any suggestions as to where a guy should start for the first build i know when to listen to advice.

I am off to go research laser glasses so i can get into this hobby with out losing my eye sight.

Welcome! I'd recommend adding your location to your profile so other members can help you with the laser laws pertaining to your state. Also, good job remembering goggles!

For you're first build I'd recommend starting with something simple, perhaps a few hundred mW diode build. DTR is a member here who can supply you with the diode, and there are plenty of build tutorials here that give sources for hosts, heat sinks, etc.

Have fun, and be careful! :D

How nice it is to read people's intro and to see they already are aware of the safety aspects and concerns of this hobby.

You'll come across these as you research safety glasses, here's a link.
Survival Laser - Eagle Pair Safety Glasses.
You need to get the ones that correspond to the laser wavelength you're using.

+Rep from me too.

Welcome to the forum.
