I thought I'd test my 803t on a buddys volt/amp regulator since my drive is still weeks away, I gave it 4.5v at 50ma and it was awesome! Run time was 10sec. I HAD to see it again, this time after a couple mins cool down time we gave it just under 30mA so we could run it a second longer, it was dim and now has a big void in the center deviding the light in two halfs. This is without a lense. I didn't want to try anything else until I knew for sure what's going on with it. Sorry but the girlfriend has my camera, so no pics. We were shining the diode at the wall, and a piece of paper the second time because it was soo weak. Before anyone asks, we never looked at the diode while it was running.

It sounds like it is fine. At 30mA it is under it's lasing threshold so that's why its putting that out. Try bumping the voltage to 5v and bring the current up to 50mA and I bet that will go away.

Just FYI, if the diode's blown, its blown! So going back to 50ma couldn't "hurt" it anymore, if it's blown that is. But yeah, sounds like all's good, but I wouldn't recommend messing with it too much before your ready to finalize the build. The more you mess with it, the more chance you could blow it!

Them there are some wise words, my friend. Listen to him

Peace,

and get a lenses, keep in mind this diode has no heat sink at all when not in a module unless you kept it in the stock heat sink of course.

but when i set my 803t diodes up on my flexmod1 drives i set the 0bias pot to somewhere between 20-30ma and thats right under the threshold of lasing.

so sounds like you just need to bump up the power!
