An interesting title

Hello! What should I say?
My name is Nicola, a guy from north Italy and I'm studying Computer Science in Bologna.
I always loved computer science, physics, electronics and, of course, lasers since I was a child.

Few days ago I started doing some searches and experiments, and yesterday I "build" my first laser: a red one from an x8 DVD burner of a laptop, drived at 175mA.
It works fine but I don't understand some things. I hope to find the answers here.
