AixiZ blank casings for 12 x 30 (simple)

Hey guys

I've been lurking around here for months gathering all the excellent information - wow.

Decided to rip the laser out of a LG 20x burner and try building my own burning laser.  Amizingly I haven't smoked the diode yet.  Using an old red pointer, I removed the brass housing and colimator and put the 20x diode in it.  While the diode doesn't perfectly fit, it's decent for temporary experiments.

Etched a dual LM317 circuit board, where the first LM317 is the voltage regulator, and second LM317 is the current regulator.  Works like a champ.  However stepping 13.8V down to 6V makes the first LM317 heat up pretty good and will need a small heatsink I'm starting to think.  Now that I got my feet wet with everything needed to power these laser diodes, I'm thinking of making a improved design.  

OK, now I'm not sure about cases for laser diodes however.

You could just use the current regulator... the diode will take the voltage it needs, you can use anything between 6-12v i think... if you really only have 13.8v try downing it to 9v with the first it'll heat less i think.
 
You don't need to regulate voltage, but if you want to then go ahead. ;D
The LM317 can take up to 35v 1.5A, I recommend you use a heatsink for anything above 9v.

You could use Meredith modules, they are higher quality but they are a lot more expensive.
