9v battery ok to test my diode?

No. He's saying a 9V won't source nearly enough current to run the laser at it's full potential. 9V's aren't really a single battery, they're 6 small 1.5v batteries in series in a rectangular case. If you can get 400mA from one, your generally doing good.

Hehehe thats a sight. never seen a peeled 9V before.

Cool so Cyparagon was refering to issues with the 9V source and not any likely current problems that will be encountered with 2 avg capacity 3.6V lithium cells.

Thanks for putting me straight :beer:

I have a 800mA AC to DC converter with selectable voltage think I could use that as a cheap bench power supply?

You could use it to power a driver.. But not diodes directly. You need a constant current supply for that.

Look for a power source close to 6V. From 6V and up the driver will regulate the current but any more voltage will turn into heat. The laser will be hotter.
