635nm vs 642nm & sources for diodes

Theres a lot of bad things written about him, but I am one who has had no problems with him and my transaction with him. I got a "635nm" .5W TO-3 diode that seems to be up to spec. for an outrageously cheap price. If your looking for an alternative check out a thread in photon lexicon for a group buy on a 642nm 150mW diode. People have had great results with them and they are twice as bright as an equivilent DVD diode at 150mW.

Edit: Heres the link, Group buy is over but you may be able to find one somewhere http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8012

Yeah, I saw the photon lexicon thread. I think I've found a really sweet diode for this build though. I'll post more details once I get my hands on it :) Thanks for posting anyway.

I'd rather not take the chance with heruursciences after what I've read, but it's good to hear not everyone got a bad deal.

On another note, I don't suppose anyone knows of a relative brightness calculator that can work out the brightness of various wavelengths?

Anyone thinking of buying something from heruursciences, DON'T! or at least think very hard before you do!

Just FYI, I don't want anyone getting scammed - see this thread for background on heruursciences:
Flea-bay bogus dealer....heruursciences - Photonlexicon

Are you freaking serious? I know about all the bad talk about heru, and much of it might be true, but not all of it. I (and many others) have had good experiences buying from Chris each time I have done business with him. I know that there are people out there who have not had the same luck, but at least they waited until they had a reason to complain. You, on the other hand, haven't even done business with him, and yet you feel like you should take it upon yourself to "warn" others about him? Frankly, I'm not convinced that all of the people who have complained about Chris really have a legitimate reason to, but like I said, at least they waited until after they bought something from him to complain. You have nothing other that what other people have said, which could be a load of BS as far as you know, right? Careful saying bad things about people you don't have first-hand experience with. It's bad form to say the least.

Again I will point you to Photon Lexicon... Search for Chroma it is exactly what you need.

Tell me where I said one "bad thing" about heru?

I think people can make up their own minds, GIVEN the thread that I linked to.

Either way, if he's such a nice person, then why are there multiple complaints about him? Where there's smoke n all that...

Nuff said...

I think EF is just stating that there doesn't need to be anything written like "DON'T! or at least think very hard before you do!". (which you typed). There is plenty of information about him all ready so unless you personally have had a problem with him, nothing should be said.

Why even link to the thread? For all you know every post in there could be BS.. (probably not, but you have no firsthand knowledge..) Also, encouraging people to avoid doing business with someone without actually having done business with them yourself constitutes saying bad things about them from a business perspective.. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Chris, but I guarantee you wouldn't like it if I talked bad about you just because someone else said you're a crappy person. If Chris hasn't done anything to you, why say anything about him? No one asked you to be the white knight of the laser business.

Fair points MW and EF...

I've not come across any posts about him on here that would make me think twice about buying from him, and I would have bought from him/gone to him had Darkarmyofone not warned me about him. I'm grateful to Dark for that, because it gave me a chance to make up my own mind about heru.

I just wanted to give others that same choice... I don't think that's unfair, and I'm certainly not trying to be a "white knight" or anything, just doing as I would expect others to do.

Granted I could be wrong, but are you implying that dozens of people are ganging up on heru for absolutely no reason? It's pretty obvious he's done something to upset people IMHO.

I won't say any more on the matter. People can make up their own minds as I said before.

Its all whatever to me... This forum has some good people and info but it is Drama-ville due to the average low age of the users here. That's why I like PL, but there is not much activity there, only like 1/10-1/5 the users here. Anyways, old news.

Did you find Chroma and try it out?

Yeah, I could do without the drama too. I've only browsed PL a little, but from what I've seen so far I'd have to agree with your comparison. I registered there too BTW (user name oxygen) but have not posted yet.

I found Chroma (thanks again), but have not installed it yet. I'll have to install it on another machine since this old putter's C-drive is getting full!

Apologies if I stepped on any toes. I edited the post in question, hopefully to everyone's satisfaction.

There are some advantages to PL, but there are also some disadvantages. Many of the members there (but definitely not all) frown on portable lasers and the people who use them. I'm not much of a pointer freak, but I have respect for the role that they play in the laser hobby and I have respect for a lot of the innovation that is accomplished by the hobbyists who build them. Sadly, I just was reading a thread there where LPF and the whole laser pointer community are referred to as "a load of immature numpties [that are] into targeting incoming aircraft, Police Helicopters, popping balloons and burning tape." Whatever a "numptie" is. Most of the time I'd rather watch the drama here (sometimes VERY entertaining) than listen to some elitist snobs have superiority complexes. Maybe that's just me, though.

Don't get me wrong, there are some knowledgeable folks on PL, but there are also some knowledgeable folks here, especially when it comes to the inner workings of lasers themselves. I've found that PL is great if you're into laser shows (which I am), but only average if you're interested in real laser theory. Of course, a lot of that has to do with the limited number of PL members.

You read my mind... that's exactly what I was wondering about. PL seemed devoid of almost any mention of portables, and a bit "one dimensional", but like you said, still lots of good info on there. I'm interested in many aspects of lasers, and considering putting together some kind of "laser show" just for kicks really, so I'm finding it quite informative.

Oh, and I had a play with Chroma. Neat program! It did exactly what I wanted it to, so thank you again for that MW :)

I do want to add that in fairness to PL, some of the minds that are directly responsible for developing parts of the technology we love are there. The knowledge is there and then some, but not as much has been written down in posts in terms of laser theory. In my experience, there is more raw knowledge on how lasers work hidden all over the place here on LPF. Both forums have their place and their own audience.
