635nm vs 642nm (and 622nm) & sources for diodes

Hi all,

I'm looking for different shades of red to the normal 650nm. I've just bought a New style waterproof 200mW red laser from O-like which is 650+/-5nm.

Would a 642nm next to the O-like be a noticeably different shade?

If anyone has any beam shots, please do share!

I would like to find a 635nm diode with an output of around 100-150mw ideally, but the higher power diodes seem hard to source, and 642nm seems like an easier to find alternative.

Does anyone know where I might be able to source diodes of this type for a portable build? Darkarmyofone will be building the laser for me :D

Looking for other sources, and also a source for 622nm diodes...

I've found some companies that are offering diodes in the range I'm interested in, but I have no idea which are trustworthy/has a good product. Can anyone help?
 
622nm isn't so common. You will have to pay thousands probably to get one of those diodes.
 
Chris has em in the diodes thread for $300-600. The 622nm diodes I mean.

They have a wierd ass diode setup though, it's NOT something you can swap into a dilda or something.

642 wouldn't be noticeably different in shade than 650, but it would be very much noticeably brighter. 635 on the other hand would have a noticeably different color than 650, and very much brighter. If you want to get an idea of the difference, click the 635 vs 660 link in my sig. Both of those lasers were nearly identical in power.
 
300-600 seems pretty good for a 622 nm. I had a quote for a basic 150mW diode (no PD/optional 9mm mounting) for about 700 from the manufacturer, but as you say quad, they are looking like a PITA to fit into anything other than a labby right now. I'm thinking the only realistic option for low wavelength in the red-orange range is going to be a 635nm.

The 635 looks totally orange in your picture... thats not what it will look like to (at least most) people in person. There is about a threefold increase in brightness for the same power between 650-ish and 635, but the beam still looks red.

Personally i find 632.8 from a HeNe also just red, but once you get to 622 it'll be orange to the eye.

That's cool. I'm actually more interested in how they photograph. The more orange the better.

Hopefully the 622nm diodes will become a more realistic option in the future.
 
As far as avoiding Chris (heruursciences), I have dealt with him off and on over a couple of years, probably a dozen buys, and I have never once had a problem in dealing with this individual. A few of my orders even included some very nice extras.
I will have absolutely no problem in ordering again from Chris, here or on ebay. The 635's and 642's I got from him were all good diodes.

where they all c mounts or does he carry 9mm and 5.6 mm? I'm not entirely sure on this.

In theory, couldn't I simply underdrive one of the 635s or 642s rated at 250mw to get it down to like 100-150 mw?

I'm going for a pointer build here.

It depends on the camera really... i have a canon that renders them pretty much the color you see, and a panasonic that tends to capture red lasers a bit magenta.

The color filters in digicams are gear toward taking pictures of normal scenes, and monochromatic light will also throw off any color balancing unless you disable that.

I believe it would depend on the diodes threshold current, so you sould only underdrive it so much before it stopped lasing.

I have mostly Canon DSLRs here, so I'm guessing that the color rendering will be more or less accurate? It'll be interesting to find out anyway!
