do these regulators really get this hot. i made a usb charger and the regulator is getting really hot for only being on for about 30 minutes

What package does the regulator come in? (Like TO-220...etc.) If you are using too small of a regulator for the job it could be getting hot because you are putting more power through it then it is meant for.
