<5mW red diode?

Does anyone have a recommendation on where to pick up bare low powered red diodes? I'm just getting started building my own hosts and I want to make a quality low powered red laser for play with my cat. For safety, I want to keep the power very low - under 5mW.
I can get cheapie modules from DX, Ebay, etc. but I'd like to build a "luxury" low powered red with totally DIY, top quality components all the way through.
