589nm vs. 593.5nm Pointers?

Well.....

I love going back reading these kinds of threads over LPF when I get bored and the fact I'll be back in the zone ordering a 405nm pointer from Laserglow tomorrow early morning made me want to start this thread :D

How come 593.5nm pointers are so much rarer then 589nm pointers? Is it due to popularity? price? newer technology? visibility? color(although it's a very small difference)?

I mean, we see tons of 589nm pointers(ok, maybe not tons) but many people have 589nm in their collection, whereas 593.5nm is still quite rare :undecided:

Also, which would you rather have? I personally, would rather have the good'ol Rigel :D

593.5nm all the way as my favorite color is orange and this was very close. IMHO it is not yellow but an amber/orange color. Some cameras see it as almost a pure yellow though.
 
maybe because 593.5nm are very inefficient compare to 589nm..... cost more to produces+less profit margin.... And as we all know Companies prioritize profit before any other factors...

Edit: 593.5nm pointers are cheaper at lower levels actually.

589 is just easier to produce, slightly higher visibility, more stable, and available in higher powers. Or so I'm told.
EDIT: but 593.5 is such a nice colour tho...

Ugh.....

Such nice pictures bruce! I'm starting to think 589nm might be better for completing a rainbow since it's more on the yellow side of things unlike 593.5?

Yes there is a noticeable difference even though there is just a 4.5nm difference between the two.

For only 4nm there is quite a bit of a difference.

Left is a 594 HeNe which is identical (to my eye at least) to 593.5 and right id 589. It's a bit over exposed but the colors are pretty close to spot on.

593.5/594 is an amber color since it's getting into the orange wavelengths where 589 is pretty much a golden yellow.

Is 589 really that yellow? I have a 593.5 as well and the colour for that one is spot on. But I never remembered 589 being that yellow
 
593.4 because I already have a 589;)
I showed 3 people my 589nm at the same time awhile back and the answers for what color it was was never straight yellow. It was yellow/orange, orange, golden or golden orange. It can make a difference when you change the background or of course having another wavelength next to it or particles in the air. Especially nice when a beam has that "shimmery" look like it's sparkling everywhere.
 
Huh, TIL. Wouldn't have thought there would be that much of a difference, cool!

@Pman: That "shimmery" look is my favourite - for any wavelength. :D

589nm is a real oddball wavelength for me to photograph and have come out accurate. By itself works pretty well:

But as soon as I added other wavelengths with it, I was amazed how orange it now looks in my photos:

To me the closest pictures I have to what it looks like to my eye is the top one and the crystal photo. I feel it is a golden yellow, if I lase a white wall with ambient light present, to my eye it is a beautiful golden yellow.
