561nm Yellow YAG (?) from Lumenis Varia Eye Laser

I only have the YAG's from the yellow and red sections, plus maybe the OC lens for the yellow section, not sure it is the same one or not, but believe it is. I am working on getting the whole deck shown in the photograph but not sure I can, he won't answer my emails asking to buy it, I guess that tells me no.. Edit: I forgot to mention I have a 3 X 3 X 5mm NL crystal for 561nm which was made for a YAG too.

yes, they use a Triple L fold (one for each WL). they are DBAR coated for their particular wavelength and side pumped by a 20W-40W coherent diode bar IIRC. 600mW is a good sounding rating. I have a set of crystals from one of these when they were retired. Dunno how you got one though, ebay? the beams end up coaxial at the right side and exit the south east part of the enclosure in your picture. Theoretically you could get probably a few watts out of one, but it'd be really hard on the optics. Too rapid of a thermal change and you'd shatter the crystals, not counting other issues.

Cool, but I only have the red and yellow YAG's from it and yes, found them on ebay. However I do not have the NL crystals, the 561nm LBO crystal I have came from a guy in Sweden who is selling them on eBay, stating they were made for high power YAG inputs and AR coated for 1122 and 561nm. I am looking for another retired unit myself so I can get more parts from one.

If the YAG's are AR coated, I imagine the 561nm "yellow" YAG is 808nm coated on the side for the pump diode and 1122nm on the ends? Is that what you have, the YAG's or the NL crystals?

I was wondering how hard they were pumping the YAG's, was guessing 20 watts, but maybe 40 for the yellow? Do you know if they were pulsing the YAG's with long or short pulses? Perhaps so long as to be considered CW?

Not positive on the electronics side. But I have a 12mm? yag and an expensive HT grown 5mm ish KTP from the coherent novus varia which is almost identical. Never used. I just need mirrors and such. Could probably get 0.5W to nearly 2W ish depending on setup. An LBO has a lower coefficient for doubling, so it's less efficient, but has a lot higher damage threshold. KTPs can grey track fast under high power, especially cheap ones. I'm surprised you were allowed to buy that. Technically private parties are not allowed to buy medical equipment.

If you ever want to part with them, let me know, maybe we can work out a deal.

I only have a few parts from one, I don't see these as medical equipment but rather laser parts, not sure they would be considered such if just having been made for a medical laser and not a piece of equipment itself. Regardless, you can buy complete working systems on eBay from time to time, there are some working eye surgery lasers listed for sale there right now, or claimed to be functional.

I know what you mean about buying medical equipment, the medical industry has everything tied up with laws preventing people from using the services of a lab without being ordered by a doctor. I find the whole system stinks because it raises the price of medical care, MEDICAL CARE for people, that is BS. Sure, it keeps the "unqualified" from practicing medicine, but that isn't wholly justifiable either, they lock up simple drugs too and prevent us from buying them without the authority of a doctor, in many countries you can buy the same drugs over the counter and they don't have a problem with them, further showing how our laws are not for what they often pretend they are for, they are really to protect their industries from competition, or lower prices. That is what happens in first world countries, they find ways to screw you and me for every last dime.

Squeak.... sound of soap box being pushed back.

Yeah pretty much. It's called big pharma and American corporate. Its all about the money.

As for the crystals, I doubt I'd ever sell them at a price that could be casually affordable.

Got it, wife took photo's for me.

The device has 3 L-fold dpss lasers in it. When driven to max output the green is 5W 532nm, the yellow about a 1W 561nm and the red about 1.5W of 660nm.

Very cool, I hope to see it running soon.
Do you have any idea when you may be done with your work ?, of course premium work is good so get all you can.

I might try to bail this coming fall and get a job working 3 months on, 3 months off as a radio officer on a big ship. If I didn't buy that apartment in Odessa and need to spend more finishing the inside, I'd be leaving soon, but that set me back too far.

I will try to get this RGY laser running as a complete unit and combine the beam outputs, well, they are already combined, just need to turn all three beams on at once :)

In the future I might separate the three diode driven YAG's to make individual pointers out of it, but might not be practical due to the requirement to fine tune the temperatures of the diode and crystals, perhaps too ambitious of a project or will end up being too big and power hungry to be portable like that.

Edit: A higher resolution photo of the Novus Varia Tri-Color Laser

There is no such thing as too powerful of a laser, not until I point one at the ground and find out I burned down a pagoda in China. :eg:

I can see that too, maybe too powerful to put in a small package though :)

Only took three months to get this, touch and go, I couldn't fork out the 1400 dollars it originally was at, but 832.00 I could squeeze out of my budget. Another 95 for shipping though.

I used to have about 6 full credit cards that I finally paid off, now I pay in full each month, not getting into that trap again.

I try to remember that life is a balance, the time we have in a finite resource, so everything does not have to be all or nothing, for instance, maybe 150 dollar shoes are cool and socially smiled upon, but my 20 dollar walmart shoes make me just as happy, probably made in the same Chinese factory, and why should I pay a 750% premium for other peoples moment of approval/happiness when I can get 7 1/2 times as much for myself.

Yes other peoples approval has some value to me, but when balanced out the scale tips in favor of my approval of me by at least 7 1/2 times as much, that and a lot more.

As it should be. I did the same thing with credit cards, no longer have that weight hanging on me.

Was in the same boat until about 5 years ago...
Now I have only one used for emergencies...
