50mw green laser came today!

My 50mw green laser came today and let me say I am very pleased with it. Build quality seems good, although the threads are a little rough, the button seems to work well, and most importantly it is very bright too. I haven't done any balloon tests or anything yet, but plan on doing them sometime in the future. I can also see the beam in my house even though it is daytime, very impressive. I am making sure to not shine it at any white or reflective surfaces in the house, and when I shine it in the house I only do it down the hallway (40 feet). I can't wait until nighttime to test it out.

Yep, I got it from Amazon.com, it is the laser sold by MPO (Micro-Fiber Products Online) and was only $46 shipped and is an excellent deal for the money IMHO. I don't know if it is actually a true 50mw like stated (it is supposed to be >49.99mw certified) and certainly appears that bright. I can see the beam in my house even though it is daytime and the house is decently lit. I have yet to try popping balloons, but I feel that it could do that easily.
 
any idea if it has an IR filter?  
It looks identical to the units sold by Skylaser.net
 
I'm glad you like it! Think about writing a review. To test for IR, shine the laser through a glass of Coke in front of a white wall and look through your camera. If you see a faint spot of color on the wall through your camera, it has IR leakage and you should probably buy a filter. If not, still treat it with caution.

Do you have goggles yet? You should definitely have goggles above 30mW. Dragonlasers sells affordable ones.

Ok, I shined the laser through a glass coke bottle and all I saw on the wall (using a digital camera) was a green color, maybe from the laser? It didn't appear to be any other color. So does that sound like IR leakage or not?

No, I plan on getting some goggles soon though, how much are the ones dragonlasers sells?
 
i cant say i know if it has an if filter. but i can tell you this greenie put's out a tight beam of ir very bright .the end cap helps keep it tight in the beam but it's there and it look's very bright . i made a diy hdd galvo driven dy a 555 timer and in the video you can see the ir beam waving back and forth bulish white . also ive sent the bean tru a ir blaster shield i use for work on led ir blaster's and you can see the ir cone in the pic's . i'll uplaod them when i find my card reader

Ok, thanks. But based on my description of the coke bottle test, does it sound like the laser has an IR filter or not? Did you get yours from amazon? How do you like yours?
 
ya it's the same one you have . i have 2 :D imo i don't think they have a filter but i can say i love them sooo bright i have also ran one for over an hour on some energizer lithium's in my homemade ghetto spirograph :o

Yes, here it is. Does anyone know if this sounds like it has an IR filter based off the IR test? Someone on amazon said it did have an ir filter. The head is glued on so I can't take it off to see either. Anyone?

Also, since I use 1.2v rechargeable batteries (1.4v when fresh), would the AAA lithium batteries (1.7v off the shelf) actually increase the output a little bit or would it just increase runtime? Because if it increases power I might go buy some lithium AAA batteries.

I think my green laser may have an IR filter though, I looked down it and saw a purple/blue thing over the laser diode, does this sound like an IR filter?
 
Hello.  The way I test my lasers for IR is by shining them through a piece of red translucent plastic.  The piece of red plastic I have blocks 100% of all 532nm (green) light.  Then I observe the output through a SONY digital handicam on its 0 lux "Nightshot" mode.  Any IR (if present) is clearly visible in the camera's view screen, and is often much more divergent than the green beam when observing the spot size at a given distance.  While this means it's power density would be less, it also means that the IR is not simply confined to the 532nm beam as some on this forum have incorrectly stated.  I found an IR spot of 4" on an Aixiz lab module at 15 feet, when the green spot size was only a few mm in diameter.

What this means is that if you want to be truly safe, I would invest in some goggles that are coated for 532nm, 1064nm, and even 808nm to be thorough.
