Well actually I was thinking about it a little differently. Going from a single beam to five increased the usefulness of the application of laser light. So maybe there will one day be an observatory that lights up the entire sky with a structured pattern of thousands of beams, but in that case I'm still thinking of something different. I want to see a laser system that can replace the light projector used in the Xbox Kinect, so that the video scanning can happen a hundred yards away. And then I can think of using this to generate a real-time 3-D environment for machine vision systems such as what I would like to have on my car, feeding an augmented-reality heads-up display. But I think too much.

1 arcsecond at 60 miles equates to 468mm or 0.0048mRad. How's that for divergence.
