recently picked up a cheap china blue laser that runs of two 16340's. it came with a bunch of wierd pattern lenses but i cant figure out why i cant get a regular beam out of it. even just the bare diode is getting me a odd output.

This is with everything removed off the front, bare diode. Should the output be that odd shape?

Yes 445nm and 450nm lasers have a rectangular beam, not round, but if it is focusable then you should still be able to get a small dot even if it isn't round.

It's a multimode diode, and as such has a rectangular beam shape.

You can get single 450nm diodes that have a rounder beam shape, but they only come in lower powers.
