20-50 MILE LONG GREEN LASER BEAM.

These shows are done with a 8-16 Watt Lasers, that can easily cut trough arm-thick steel.

Somehow I don't think a 16W laser could cut a hole in arm thick steel.

Still, nice video.

I wonder who came up with that indeed... steel is pretty reflective as it is, but even if it were all absorbed i doubt very much that 10 watts would even cut a milimetre thick sheet... certainly not unless focussed on a tiny spot.

I'm not sure any laser can cut through arm thick (length or width?) steel reliably.

We'll see what the military has to say about that.  ;)

I saw this video a while ago... it made me want one. The photos are nice. I wonder if they needed permission to blast a 16W beam halfway across the city. Onto buildings.

it might be Q switched, and 16W is it's CW rating.

Oh, that might very well be possible, but as these are green DPSS lasers they are probably just plain CW or operated at a large duty cycle.

16W average with a limited repeat rate and nanosecond pulses would surely 'cut' arm (or tree) thick steel, albeit it more ablating than cutting operated like that... a matter of vaporizing a bit each pulse of before heat can conduct away.

O RLY?

1MW chemical oxygen laser! :o

I wonder how many people in the city saw those beam shots!  :o

My RPL could do that!  :P

But I don't have the ballz, or maybe I'm just smart and wouldn't ever do that. ;)
