New to lasers,so I saw one particular compny selling a >$200.00 5mW green laser with a projection range of 20,000 feet. Is this range possible for a 5mW green laser pointer which has 'superior' lenses? They are saying it is 5mW exactly?! Thanks,Huck50

Technically, it could be true. But honestly, there's no way of verifying, you won't see that far and by then the laser woud have lost all of it's visibility by then!

Yeah...when you think about it,you could have a pointer that projects out to 10 miles, but if your old eyes like mine only see out to one mile, what's the point?! Thanks,Huck50

I think it's more a show-off thing! Hey, my laser can shoot 5000 feet! Oh yeah, mine can shoot 15000 feet! Haha:lasergun:

That sounds more like it! So let's say it "can" project out to 20,000' (close to 4miles),would that same beam be super bright and well focused out to say 1000 yards? Thanks,Huck50

The laser beam will diverge, to point that kind of distance with only 5mW you would need a tiny divergence.

When I shine my 2000mW blue (445nm) and my 100mW green (532nm) into the night sky, side by side, they appear to my eye to traverse the same distance. When it gets out that far, it's really hard to tell.

In term of bragging rights, I'm expecting the sites to begin saying, "buy our lasers because the light is more coherent and polarized better than the next guy."

It wouldn't surprise me if 5mW of green would travel further than that on a clear day.
