I have had two blurays, both made by IgorT. One is 120mw the other about 95. The 120mw is closer to the 400nm end of the spectrum than the 95. The 120 also causes more fluorescing and burns the eyes out of Washington and Lincoln faster. I have lit one or the other up every night before I go to sleep for the half year that I have had them. My bedroom is a collection of glow in the dark paint, vaseline glass, dayglow paint art and glow in the dark plastic animals. My wife has fun with me too. I enjoy them so much more than my 250mw green or 200mw red. I cant wait for a new generation of diodes.

are they dangerous to your eyes? i keep hearing you need goggles to play with blu-ray laser pointers.

not only blu-ray, but anything that puts out a relatively large amount of mW... anything that is 30 mW or greater (some ppl might have different opinios about this) will cause damage to you eyes if you catch a reflection off a shiny surface. so not because its blu-ray it makes it dangerous, since you can have in infrared laser (which you can't see) that can burn your eyeballs off too!

5mW is the maximum power that's safe on the eyes... This isn't an opinion, it's the legal limit for most countries, as well as occupational safety regulations. Also bluray isn't infrared, it's on the opposite end of the spectrum, close to ultraviolet. Your point remains valid though, bluray appears much dimmer to the eye than it really is, causing some people to underestimate its danger. A friend of mine is terrified of a 5mW greenie, because she can see the beam and assumes it's dangerously powerful, yet she loves the bluray, thinking that it's much less powerful and safer, when in reality it's some 20x more powerful and dangerous.

405nm is a higher energy wavelength compared to 650nm. So you do need to be extra careful.

5mW is the limit for getting the laser in your eye. 30mW is the limit for looking at the dot.

actually, a 30mW red or BR isn't all that painful to look at the dot. :p

Retina burns don't cause pain. The muscles clamping down and cramping up as the body tries to protect the eyes does. By the time the muscles clamp/cramp the damage is already done.

Peace,
