i just stumbled apon this:
dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10008

by looking at the circuit board, i can tell that it wants an AC input. i would also say that it appears to be from some type of laser show or something like that.

it says ac on the input and there is also appears to have a bridge rectifier.
i bet the rectifier could be bypassed.

btw, i just found a dx 35mw green module.

wow, DX is really getting some good deals on lasers now - the red does indeed want an AC input but that could be bypassed as charley has said. green module also looks very nice although with a 5vdc input instead

You can feed a bridge rectifier with ac or dc. The only problem is when feeding it with dc two of the diodes are 100% duty cycle and the other two are 0% so it might burn up. When fed with ac all four diodes are 50% duty cycle.

What'd be really cool is if they get the blue laser modules of this same kind from Newwish, though with the price scaling from red to green, expect it to be very expensive.
