On a 1N400x diode, the stripe = the cathode.
Cathode = negative
Anode = positive
The striped end = negative

It seems to me all the graphics that represent a diode in that thread are backwards!
I was rifling thru the drawers at RS today, and I saw one of these:

I wonder if it could be used somehow in a DIY laser power meter? Interesting!
I was reading the DIY Driver thread, and some other threads about building a test load, etc. today at work - and I knew I had various 1N400x diodes at home in my bug box.
So, I did a bit of quick research, and I found out: for our purposes, it doesn't matter if it's a 1N4001 or a 1N4007 -- for...
Re: Burning: PHR-803T blu-ray vs LG 20x red
Oh, I understand completely Ohm's Law and how to calculate electrical power - I learned it when we were still using E for voltage. ;)
Since (P=IE) =| optical power, I figured that electrical power was kind of irrelevant. ;)
Still going strong - it's a Side Button Pocket Pal style build, using a Viclight and one of Jayrob's heatsinks. Flexdrive powering it off 3 AAAs at 150mA.
The diode is seated in the Aixiz module with Arctic Silver, and the joint between the Aixiz module and the heatsink is filled with Arctic...

That stuff works great when you need to join two things together permanently and heat transfer is an issue.
The best rechargeable AA/AAA cells I've found to date are Maha Powerex.

I bought the Wizard One Charger/Analyzer too -- it's a great tool for keeping all my AA/AAA NiMH cells in good shape.
Well said Gus. I feel the same way - children are just that: children.
A lot of them I see these days seem to think they are entitled to adult-style treatment, and that just isn't gonna fly.
Maturity is one thing, and I acknowledge that I've met some kids who I consider quite mature for their...

Now, I don't know how old Artix is, but that is EXACTLY how I imagine a teenager feeling & acting with a high powered laser.
Excited, it's snowing, this is gonna be cool, etc. = bad judgment using the...
I would say that you should listen to your Mother - who are we to question the judgment of some kid's parent(s)?
If Mom says NO - then that's that. End of discussion.
