Uses for different Nd based wavelengths

I'm making a poster on Neodymium for my chemistry class. I'll be devoting a small section to Nd doped lasers, focussing on a few particular wavelengths. Specifically 355nm 473nm 532nm 589nm and 1064nm. What are some things I can say about each wavelength? 355nm is used in inertial...

    Micro USB Flash Drive?

Has anyone flirted with the idea of making a flash drive that plugs into a micro-USB port? It would be good for expandable storage for tablets that don't have a microSD slot (I'm looking at you, Nexus 7 :tsk: ). It would be even better if you could integrate it with one of those super tiny USB...

    Eagle Pair 190-470, 610-760 for >1W lasers

I have these goggles, are they suitable for more than a watt of 445? I know that's what they say, but has anyone tested them?

    Scientific Ignorance

I know it's from last year, but what are your opinions on this? Warning - Your cordless phone may subject you to harmful levels of EMFs

    Some questions

I have a few questions that I couldn't resolve through searching. 1.) Why is the lasing threshold for 445nm diodes so high? Is it because of resonator losses? If that is so, why can we have low power diodes like PHRs? 2.) How do you get YAG or YVO4 to lase at different wavelengths (for blue...

    Battery tube for laser gun.

So basically I'm building a laser gun. :eg: I will be running it off of a single 18650 battery, so I need a tube for it. The requirements are: 1.) SMOOTH aluminum (no knurling or varying diameters) 2.) Tail cap (maybe with clicky switch?) 3.) + and - contacts in the front that can be soldered...

    Polished New Wish Pointer

I decided to polish my laser pointer since I thought it looked fugly. It is a "5mW" 405nm New Wish pen which probably outputs around 30mW. The front part is brass with a copper cap. The rear part is crappy pot metal with a copper cap and threads. Here are some pictures: Here it is...

    Why do diodes need lenses?

Diode lasers and gas lasers work on the same principles, so why do diodes need lenses and gas lasers do not? Is it because the cavity is so short?

    Viewing beam with goggles on

I have a ~200mW 650nm laser and eagle pair 190-470, 610-760nm OD4+ safety goggles. How should I go about viewing the beam? Is there e a safe set up for viewing the beam without goggles?

    First Laser Build - LPC-815 @ 355mA

So i built this laser, it's pretty neat I guess. I don't have goggles so I built a beam stop thingy which keeps my eyes safe. It is an LPC-815 running at 355mA from a GhostDrive2. Here are some pictures of it:
