    Airsoft

I prefer real guns to AirSoft, but there is an AirSoft store just down the street from where I live. I visited it once a few years ago. It's crazy how lifelike they are and how they operate. I was very impressed. Some of these guns can cost as much as the real deal. They had a sniper rifle in...

    Superbowl haltime show

The lasers were the ONLY good thing about halftime. Well, other than when halftime was over. Maybe it's just me, but The Who sucked big-time.

You guys are so funny. But I have a question: Who do these chicks work for?

    DIY Homemade laser diode driver

I apologize if this has been requested already, or if I missed it, but... I'd like to make a request for photos of completed DDL's, for those of us who are newer to circuits and soldering. I'd love to see photos of both sides of a completed driver, so I can get an idea of whether I'm doing...

    Old Digitizer and Scanner: useful?

Yeah, I got it after posting here. I guess I should check my inbox more often. LOL. I'll check on the working status of the digitizer and get back to you. Thanks for your interest, and your help w/ my inquiry!

    Old Digitizer and Scanner: useful?

I figured the scanner would be a good source of goodies.... I might even hold onto it for a working scanner at home. Or I might rip into it and salvage things. I'm not sure yet. As for the digitizer, let me know if you'd like to buy it. I have no use for it. I have the 16-button puck and power...

    Old Digitizer and Scanner: useful?

I have two old computer-related items just sitting here at my desk at work. The owner doesn't want them anymore, as they're outdated and not used anymore.... I'm wondering if I can use them for, well, anything (other than their original purpose)? Do they have anything worthwhile inside them...

Would these tools be decent enough for this hobby?

Thanks for the input everyone. By the posts I got, it sounds like I'd probably be fine w/ the calipers, but I should invest a little more $ into a better DMM (at least one that'll measure the currents we deal with). I already have a little vise, and it worked just fine with pressing the LD...

Would these tools be decent enough for this hobby?

I receive a Harbor Freight "deals" email every few days. They have a few really good deals on some tools that would come in handy for this hobby (some of which I already bought and use), but wanted to run it past the membership here to get a definite opinion on two particular items. Would...

    RGB anti-pirate laser weapon

Problem is, how do you know for sure whether a pirate (or robber, etc) is going to use non-lethal force on you (or anyone) in the first place? Especially if they're holding lethal weapons (RPG, firearms, knives). You don't. You can't wait until after they start killing people to decide which...

    RGB anti-pirate laser weapon

Consequences? You mean like the elimination of a threat, one at a time? Sounds good to me. Those pirates that take over ships and terrorize the crew don't deserve "non-lethal" means. Kind of the same idea about a robber who breaks into my home at night and wants my money. He won't be met with...

    Computer PSU to power LDs?

Here ya go. Pins 13-24: Pins 01-12: In case the photo isn't clear enough, the wire colors are as follows (assuming Dell follows the same pin layout): 01 red 02 black 03 red 04 black 05 orange 06 purple? 07 yellow 08 blue 09 black 10 black 11 blue w/ white stripe 12 blue 13 black 14 blue...

    Computer PSU to power LDs?

Since my PSU didn't come with an on/off switch, I was researching how to keep it on. I came across SuicideKing's post from a different thread: My power connector has the 24 pins, but it's NOTHING like the wire color pictured. SuicideKing says it's always the green wire. But my 24-pin connector...

Wire Sources: Wire from Ethernet cable?

Now that's a lot of wire!!

Wire Sources: Wire from Ethernet cable?

I think part of the "lure" of this hobby (at least for me) is finding things to use that are readily available at home, as opposed to going out and just buying it. Sure, recycling is good, and going "green" is good.... But, when you can "extract" or "discover" a component or host or anything...

That was an awesome video. Quite an impressive setup (at least to me).

    Tiny "Micro Labby" Showcase

I thought that was a professionally-built lab laser at first. It's a very small and sleek looking unit. Really nice. Very well-done! :gj:

Anything salvageable from HP dvd1035 drive?

Oh, OK. So you're saying the LD emits light in all directions, and that hole in the lens module "limits" the usable light into the direction of the lens? So by opening up the hole, more light gets into the lens and can be used and focused? Something along those lines? I guess that makes sense.

Anything salvageable from HP dvd1035 drive?

Yeah, there's a spring, too. I knew where that went. So, I want the small hole end to be closest to the LD, and the lens on the "outside" so to speak. Gotcha. And I'll put the ribbed silver ring onto the black lens first, then screw that into the module. Thanks! How does opening up that hole...
